What sports massage involves

Sports massage concentrates on the muscles and soft tissue that your activity or routine asks the most of. Mo works on the areas you want to focus on, with firmer, more targeted work where muscles are tight and a lighter touch where they aren’t.

The aim is to ease tightness and discomfort and help you move more comfortably. You don’t need to be an athlete: plenty of people book because of their job, their posture or a long week.

Common reasons people book

  • Tightness after running, cycling, the gym or team sport
  • Neck and shoulder tension from desk work
  • Aches from physical or repetitive work
  • A long week of training or matches
  • Staying on top of tension before it builds up

When to check first

Sports massage isn’t a substitute for medical care. For a recent injury, or pain that is severe, getting worse, or comes with numbness, swelling or pins and needles, see your GP or a physiotherapist first. If you’re unsure, ask Mo before you book.

What happens in a sports massage

Your first appointment follows the same shape. If anything is unclear, ask before you book. Read what to expect at your first sports massage.

Before you start

Tell Mo where you feel tight or sore, what training or work you do, and anything that’s been bothering you. Let him know about any injuries, health conditions or medication.

Tailored to you

The massage is suited and adapted to you: firmer, more targeted work where muscles are tight and a lighter touch where they aren’t. It can feel firm in tight areas, but it shouldn’t be more than you’re comfortable with.

The massage

Mo works through the areas you’ve talked about, spending longer where it’s needed. 60 minutes suits one or two areas; 90 minutes gives time for several.

Afterwards

Many people feel looser straight away. It’s common to feel a little tender for a day or so in areas that had firmer work.

Sports massage questions

Something else on your mind? Ask Mo a question on WhatsApp, email or call 07309 054763.

Do I need to be sporty to book?

Not at all. Sports massage is a good choice for everyday muscular tension as well as training. Tell Mo what you’d like to focus on and the session will be shaped around you.

Will sports massage hurt?

It can feel firm in tight areas, but it shouldn’t be more than you’re comfortable with. Let Mo know if you’d like more or less pressure at any point.

Sports massage or deep tissue?

Sports massage is a good starting point for training-related and everyday tension. Deep tissue massage works more slowly into deeper layers, for long-held tightness that lighter pressure doesn’t reach. If you’re unsure, book either and talk it through with Mo at the start. Read the full guide.

How often should I book?

It depends on your training, your work and how your body responds. Some clients come for a one-off session; others book regularly to stay on top of tension. Mo can talk it through with you. Read the guide to how often to book a massage.

Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?

Choose 60 minutes for a focused session on one or two areas, or 90 minutes if you’d like more time across several areas.

Is there anything I should tell Mo first?

Yes: any injuries, health conditions or medication, so the treatment can be adapted. If you’re not sure whether massage is suitable for you, ask Mo before you book.
