What deep tissue massage involves

Deep tissue massage uses slower, more sustained pressure than other massage, working into the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around it.

Pressure builds gradually and is applied with control, so it stays effective without being overwhelming. Because the work is slower, it helps to pick a few areas to focus on, or to book 90 minutes.

Common reasons people book

  • Tightness or stiffness that keeps coming back
  • Postural strain from desk work or repetitive tasks
  • Persistent muscle soreness
  • Tension that lighter massage hasn’t shifted
  • Active people who want deeper, focused work

When to check first

Deep tissue massage isn’t right for everyone. If you have a recent injury, a health condition or take blood-thinning medication, or you have pain that is severe or unexplained, check with your GP first and ask Mo before you book.

What happens in a deep tissue massage

Your first appointment follows the same shape. If anything is unclear, ask before you book.

Before you start

Tell Mo where the tension is, how long it’s been there and what makes it worse. Let him know about any injuries, health conditions or medication.

Tailored to you

The massage is adapted to your needs. Deep tissue is firmer than a relaxing massage, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming: pressure builds gradually and is applied with control.

The massage

Mo works slowly into the areas you’ve talked about. In 60 minutes you’ll usually focus on one or two areas; 90 minutes allows more.

Afterwards

Many people feel lighter afterwards. It’s common to feel a little tender for a day or so where deeper work was done.

Deep tissue questions

Something else on your mind? Ask Mo a question on WhatsApp, email or call 07309 054763.

Is deep tissue massage painful?

It’s firmer than a relaxing massage, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming. Pressure builds gradually and is adjusted to you, so let Mo know if you’d like more or less at any point. Read more about deep tissue massage and pressure.

How will I feel afterwards?

Many people feel looser and lighter. It’s common to feel a little tender for a day or so in areas that had deeper work.

Deep tissue or sports massage?

Deep tissue suits long-held tightness that doesn’t shift with lighter pressure. Sports massage is a good starting point for training-related and everyday tension. If you’re unsure, book either and talk it through with Mo at the start. Read the full guide.

How often should I book?

It depends on your training, your work and how your body responds. Some clients come for a one-off session; others book regularly to stay on top of tension. Mo can talk it through with you. Read the guide to how often to book a massage.

Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?

Choose 60 minutes for a focused session on one or two areas, or 90 minutes if you’d like more time across several areas.

Is there anything I should tell Mo first?

Yes: any injuries, health conditions or medication, so the treatment can be adapted. If you’re not sure whether massage is suitable for you, ask Mo before you book.
