Your first sports massage in Norwich: What to expect

Waiting area with a grey sofa, wooden coffee table and indoor plants.

Your first sports massage starts with a friendly chat about what you’d like to get from the session, any areas of discomfort or tension, and a few questions about your general health to make sure massage is safe and suitable for you. You don’t need to play sport, know which muscles are tight or have had a massage before.

If you’re thinking about booking a sports massage in Norwich, here’s what to expect at Soma Wellbeing Centre, from arriving to heading home.

What happens when you arrive?

For your first appointment, it’s always worth arriving 5 minutes early, so there’s plenty of time to get settled and go through a few things before your massage. This helps you make the most of your time on the treatment couch.

Whether you’re dealing with tight shoulders after a week at your desk, tired legs from training or have a particular area of discomfort, you’ll have the opportunity to explain what’s been bothering you.

You can also mention any injuries, health conditions or medication that might be relevant, along with anything you’re unsure about. There’s no need to arrive with a diagnosis or a plan. The aim is simply to understand your needs and make sure you feel comfortable before getting started.

What should you wear?

Wear something comfortable and easy to change out of. If you’d prefer to wear shorts during the treatment, bring a pair that allows access to the area you’d like worked on.

You only need to undress to a level you’re comfortable with. Mo will explain what’s needed before you get started, and you can ask questions or say what you’d prefer.

What does the massage feel like?

Sports massage is focused work, so the pressure can vary between areas. You can ask for it to be lighter or firmer, and you can ask to pause or stop at any point. There’s no need to put up with pressure that feels too much.

Let Mo know how it feels as you go. A simple “a little lighter there” is enough. You don’t have to wait until the end to mention something.

Should you book 60 or 90 minutes?

A 60-minute session is a good starting point if you’d like to focus on one or two areas. Choose 90 minutes if there are several areas you’d like worked on, or you’d simply prefer more time.

Sessions with Mo are £50 for 60 minutes and £75 for 90 minutes. If you’re unsure which length to choose, ask Mo before you book.

What happens afterwards?

Before you leave, there’s a chance to talk about how the session felt and ask any questions. You don’t need to decide on another appointment there and then. If you’d like to come regularly, you can talk through what makes sense for you.

Everyone’s experience is different, so there’s no promise that one visit will sort everything out. Let Mo know how you get on afterwards, especially if you have any questions about the treatment.

Where do you go?

Appointments are at Soma Wellbeing Centre, 3–6 Bagley’s House, Bagley’s Court, Pottergate, Norwich NR2 1TW. It’s in the courtyard opposite The Belgian Monk, in the Norwich Lanes.

Pottergate car park is a couple minutes walk away. Your confirmation email includes your appointment details and the information you need for your visit.

Not sure sports massage is the right fit?

If you’re looking for slower, sustained work on tight areas, you might prefer deep tissue massage. If your main aim is to switch off, relaxation massage may suit you better.

The sports massage and deep tissue comparison guide explains the difference. You can also ask Mo first, rather than feeling you have to work it all out yourself.

Ready when you are

Choose a session and a time that suits you, or send Mo a question first. There’s no need to know exactly what to ask for before you arrive.

Questions people ask

Do I need to play sport?

No. You can book for everyday muscular tension as well as tightness linked to training or physical work. Tell Mo what’s brought you in and you can agree where to focus.

Can I ask for lighter pressure?

Absolutely. Pressure is adjusted to you, and you can ask for a change at any point during the session.

Can I wear shorts?

Yes. If you’d prefer to wear shorts, bring a comfortable pair that gives access to the areas you’d like worked on. You can talk through what you’re comfortable with before the massage starts.

What if I’m unsure which treatment to book?

Read the treatment pages or send Mo a message before booking. You can explain what you’re looking for in your own words.
